New-York Historical is temporarily closed to help contain the spread of COVID-19, but we expect to reopen August 14 with a free, outdoor exhibition. See more details on our Visit page.

New-York Historical Reopening Protocols and Procedures

Disinfection Procedures

The entire building will be decontaminated and disinfected with museum-appropriate cleaning materials prior to reopening, and after opening in accordance with best practices. Hand sanitizers will be available throughout the building.

Cleaning Protocols

Once open, maintenance staff will perform enhanced cleaning throughout the day to ensure healthy and safe conditions in the building.

Health Declaration and Temperature Checks for Staff and Visitors

All staff will be screened regarding their health and be subject to a temperature screening daily prior to entering the building. Visitors will be subject to a temperature screening. Any staff member who has any COVID-19 symptoms, has tested positive, or has been in contact with someone who has tested positive within the past 14 days will be required to stay home and seek medical assistance. Visitors will be advised by posted signage not to enter the building if they have experienced COVID-19 symptoms, tested positive, or been in contact with someone who has tested positive within the past 14 days. We reserve the right to refuse entry to any visitor with a 100.4+ temperature.

Contactless Transactions

Advance and timed admissions for visitors will be implemented, as well as cashless payments to the extent permitted by law. A no-touch or low-touch visitor experience will be implemented.

Special Hours

Individuals over 65 and individuals who are immunocompromised will be admitted on specially reserved days and/or times.

Personal Protection Equipment

Face coverings will be required for all visitors older than age two inside our building, including employees. Face coverings will be made available, without charge, to anyone requesting them. Security personnel will wear additional PPE, including face shields and gloves to allow for safe and secure inspection of bags brought into the building.

Social Distancing

Social distancing is required and will be enforced; parties may remain together; children must stay with adults at all times. Signage will be placed throughout the building—upon approaching the entrance, in each of the galleries, and in public and office spaces—reminding people to maintain social distancing (floor decals will be placed to facilitate), to cough or sneeze in the crook of their elbows, to leave the building if they are not feeling well, and to use hand sanitizer canisters located throughout the building.

In the event there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at New-York Historical, immediate steps will be taken to disinfect the affected area and notification will be made to potentially exposed staff members.

Facilities Still on Pause

During our initial reopening period, some spaces may be closed. Coat check will not be available, and our restaurant will be closed until further notice. (Our espresso bar, with packaged food service available, will be open to visitors and staff.) The auditorium will reopen when our onsite public programming resumes, with social distancing protocols in place.
