The New-York Historical Society Education Division provides dynamic programming and curriculum resources for students and teachers in New York and beyond. Historical study sparks curiosity and creativity, promotes cultural understanding, and fosters an empowered citizenry to strengthen our democracy. Our staff of passionate professionals draws on our world-renowned collections to engage learners of all ages in the study of our collective past.

New-York Historical Society offers teacher professional development workshops for schools and groups seeking a customized experience via distance learning or in-person instruction.  

Custom teacher PD introduces teachers to the benefits of inquiry-based learning. While our focus is American history, we have extensive experience working with educators and administrators across a variety of academic subjects, including social studies, humanities, English language arts (ELA), civics, and more. Our workshops emphasize culturally responsive practices that give students access to images, documents, and objects from history. 

Our team can help you create a program that meets your group’s needs. Possible formats include:

  • Online teacher PD workshops that connect participants to online curriculum resources and model best practices for remote instruction and online history lessons.
  • A series of workshops online or in your school that fulfill the weekly NYC DOE professional learning requirement
  • A remote or in-person professional learning community (PLC) designed to connect teachers across a range of grades, subject areas, or schools
  • A full-day retreat for your team at our museum

Workshops can cover a range of topics that emphasize either pedagogy practices or US history content

The New-York Historical Society is an NYSED-approved CTLE sponsor. Participation in teacher professional development workshops and online PD for teachers is applicable towards maintaining professional certification from the New York City Department of Education.
